Dr. Geo Kelly Wins Bernhardt Academic Excellence Award at SWOSU

Dr. Geo Kelly, associate professor of marketing in the Everett Dobson College of Business and Technology, has been named the recipient of the 2024 Bernhardt Academic Excellence Award at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU). The award ceremony took place on March 14 in the Memorial Student Center Ballroom. Alongside the award, Kelly received a $5,000 prize, clock, pen, and medallion.

Brandi (Pope) Thompson I attended SWOSU in Weatherford where I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. In 2007 I married Matt Thompson. We moved back to Sayre to my family farm where we started our family. Our daughter, Makenzie is a 14 year old 8th grader in Canute Public School. She is active in fast pitch softball, slow pitch softball, basketball, travel ball, FCA, and FFA. Our son, Maddox is a 12 year old 6th grader in Canute Public School. He is active in baseball, basketball, and travel ball. I taught in Sayre Public Schools for many years while my kids attended school in Sayre. We recently moved to Canute, Ok. where I’m currently teaching 2nd grade, chasing my kids around through all of their activities, and enjoying life!

Crematory Concerns Spark Planning and Zoning Board Hearing and Final Decision

Elk City’s Chris Whinery’s recent permit request concerning the construction of a crematory was the only item on the agenda at the Tues, March 26th, Elk City Planning and Zoning Board, at 6 p.m., in City Hall. The area has been zoned C-2, Highway Commercial and Commercial Recreation District, since 1995. The issue became under scrutiny with a written protest from Richard and Tammy Dugger of Martin – Dugger Funeral Home. After hearing from both sides of the proposed construction, the board voted to approve a crematory being located in a C-2 Highway Commercial and Commercial Recreation zoning.
