Hays given bond conditions as Judge Roper is recused

A bond hearing for a 37-year-old Carter man charged with first-degree manslaughter was held in the Beckham County District Court at 2 pm on March 29.

Clayton Samson Hays was granted a $500,000 bond in a once again packed courtroom.

Additionally, Hays was given conditions of not having contact with his alleged victim’s family, not posting on any social media platforms, surrendering his passport to the Beckham County Sheriff’s Office for storage, surrendering his firearms to the BCSO, refraining from possessing, acquiring, or having access to firearms, refraining from possessing or consuming alcohol, wearing a GPS ankle monitor and keeping it charged at all times, and allowing access to the GPS ankle monitor’s data.

District Judge Jill Weedon presided over this hearing. The preliminary hearing scheduled for 9:30 am on July 25 was assigned to Judge S. Brooke Gatlin.

Beckham County Associate District Judge Michelle Kirby-Roper was recused from the case for preexisting outstanding interests.

Hays was charged with first-degree manslaughter on January 18 following the shooting death of Colter Vaught.

A protective order was also filed against Hays on March 29.
