The Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) actively engaged students in handson ecology and environmental science activities during Innovation Week 2023. This event took place at the Science Museum of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City from Sept. 19 to 21.

From all that I saw and have heard, the Purple People Eater Fest was great success! Now we have another something to look forward to as well, as Sam’s Town on 66 is hosting “Sam’s Fest” this coming Saturday, 10/7, from 5:00 p.m. until sunset that evening. There will be a cookout with all proceeds going to Toys for Tots. Lots of activities and fun for everyone are planned for the evening including music and Karaoke, storytelling, horseshoes and corn-hole games plus tours of this unique place that Sam Hagan has created, being described as a journey through history and art. Bring your own beverages, blankets or chairs, but please remember that you are responsible for your own belongings and children. The Miss SWOSU Pageant, a tradition at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU), is making subtle yet strategic changes this year, with the goal of ensuring continued opportunities for its contestants.

There will be bargains galore all over town this weekend, October 6 and 7, as the Sayre Chamber of Commerce hosts the city’s semi-annual City-Wide Garage Sale. Sale locations will be posted Thursday morning, Oct. 5, on the Chamber’s Facebook page and printed lists will be available at the Route 66 Farmers Market (old Sonic Drive-in), Sayre Floral, City Hall, Southbound and Gallery@112. Elk City Sonic employee helps Sayre Public Schools with grant from her employer

Kris Carnahan is Beckham County through and through. His family has been around as long as any. His formidable years were spent in the halls of Elk City Public Schools.

An arrest warrant was filed against a 23-year-old Elk City woman in the Beckham County District Court on September 27.

The Elk City Commissioners held their regular meeting, Wed. Sept. 20, at 2 p.m. in City Hall. Mayor Cory Spieker opened the meeting with an invocation, followed by Rocky Andresen leading the flag salute. City Inspector Jackie Addington was first on the agenda with the public hearing for dilapidated structures.

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) has conducted annual roadside quail surveys in August and October since 1990 to provide an index of annual population fluctuations. The number of quail observed are reported to provide an index of quail abundance and an indicator of reproductive success.
