The Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) actively engaged students in handson ecology and environmental science activities during Innovation Week 2023. This event took place at the Science Museum of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City from Sept. 19 to 21.
Innovation Week welcomed over 900 middle-school students from the OKC metro, offering them a unique opportunity to explore potential careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. With more than 20 companies and universities participating, the event aimed to inspire young minds.
SWOSU Biology provided an interactive activity where students had the opportunity to capture and examine small aquatic animals using microscopes. This hands-on experience helped students understand how these animals play a vital role in informing environmental scientists about water quality.
Biology students providing valuable service at the event included Terez Chavez, Payden Farnsley, Stevie Langstraat, McKaegan Gregory, and Madalyn White. The team was led by Drs. Rickey Cothran and Peter Grant.
