ECHS Baseball Pitcher named Gatorade Oklahoma Athlete of the Year

CHICAGO – In its 38th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, Gatorade today announced Kash Mayfield of Elk City High School is the 2022-23 Gatorade Oklahoma Baseball Player of the Year. Mayfield is the first Gatorade Oklahoma Baseball Player of the Year to be chosen from Elk City High School.

One Hundred Years Ago, June 1923

Otis, the young son of Robert L. Ward, had quite a bit of trouble with one of his ears and was taken to the hospital where a piece of glass was removed. About ten years earlier, when he was very small, Otis got a glass bead stuck in his ear at school, which was crushed while being removed. The ear troubled him ever since.

Prolonged drought leaves mark on beef industry

STILLWATER – Drought throughout the Southern Plains has taken its toll on Oklahoma cattle producers over the past two years. Ponds are dry, pastures are brown and cattle herds have been liquidated, especially in western Oklahoma.

Fishing Report

SOUTHWEST Ellsworth: May 28. Elevation is 3.5 ft. below normal and stable, water temperature 75°F and murky. ( USGS Lake Level) Saugeye excellent on crankbaits, slabs, and small lures around main lake and shorelines. Blue and channel catfish fair on chicken liver, punch bait, and shad around flats and points. Crappie fair on jigs and minnows around brush structure, docks, and rocks. Ivory ‘N Ovations goes Purple for Alzheimer Awareness

18 piano students of Ivory ‘N Ovations presented a spring recital at Homestead Senior Living facility in Elk City on May 25 at 2 p.m. Ivory ‘N Ovations is the piano studio of Mrs. Jerri Headrick in Sayre. Students from eight to eighteen years old shared their polished piano solos to the audience of family and friends. The Studio practice incentive this spring was a fundraiser for Western Oklahoma Alzheimer Collaborative. Students asked people to sponsor them per day of practice during the spring semester. Over $1500 was raised and more continues tocomein. Aspecialthanks to Homestead residents and staff for hosting the students and parents. A unique treat was a duet performed by Ms. Paula Isch and Mrs. Jerri Headrick to begin the recital. Ms. Isch is a Homestead resident and continues to play and do some teaching. What an inspiration she is!

150 fingers stay busy at Ivory ‘N Ovations Piano

Ivory ‘N Ovations piano classes presented fifteen beginning piano students performing for their families on May 16 and May 18. They played solos, an ensemble piece and an improvisation piece. The students are learning the basics of good hand and finger technique at the piano, as well as beginning theory, rhythm, expression, improvisation and note-reading. The piano class consists of 7 full-sized keyboards, and a modern lab system which allows the teacher to hear individual students or several students at a time.

Berlin fundraiser

Berlin Community Building host its annual fundraising dinner on June 10 at 6:00 pm. The menu will consist of chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn, salad, hot rolls and homemade desserts. Bring your family and friends to enjoy a good home cooked meal.
