I received this irate letter from a young person in response to last week’s column: “Dr. Dixie, I’m healthy, just out of college, newly employed and self-supporting. I like sex! I’m tired of religious “dinosaurs” like you trying to make me feel guilty. It’s time for you to come out of the dark ages and realize you can’t make us hate sex. Give it up!”

The Elk City Commissioners met for their regular mid-month meeting, Tues., Jan 17th, at 2 p.m., in City Hall. All commissioners were present except Rocky Andresen. Mayor Cory Spieker gave the invocation, while Rick Shelton led the flag salute. They approved the minutes from the Jan. 2nd meeting, then went straight into item one on the agenda.

Four regional bowfishing representatives used an hour of testimony this week to move the eight-member Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Commission to spike a proposal to regulate the activity with daily bag limits and outlawing shoot-and-release.

It’s a short column this week, but besides basketball games this week, I don’t see anything major happening here in Erick from the normal pages I check on Facebook! Western Oklahoma Christian School, with campuses in Clinton, Weatherford, and Elk City, recognizes the following students for their academic achievements for the second nine weeks. The school distinguishes two levels of honors each nine-week grading period: Honor Roll with Distinction is for students who receive all A’s.

Due to printing and delivery schedule changes, the Beckham County Record will be changing from a Wednesday publication to a Saturday publication. The first edition on this new schedule will arrive in mailboxes Saturday, February 10, 2024.

A 37-year-old Carter man is being held without bond in the Beckham County Detention Center after being charged with first-degree manslaughter in the Beckham County District Court on January 18.

The Department of Music at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) welcomes guests and players to attend the 54th Annual Jazz Festival on Thursday, Feb. 15, and Friday, Feb. 16 on the Weatherford campus, with performances from featured guests, the Terell Stafford Quintet.
