One Hundred Years Ago, March 1924
March was a month of measles and oil fever (neither fatal!). Both the Ira and Will Cain families suffered from measles; Will’s family had seven cases at once! SOCCER… AKA “Futbol”
Futbol is the team sport most played around the world, yet, it is not as popular in the United States. Many highs schools do not have a soccer team, let alone two, as Elk City High School has. Probably the reason is that sports fans think that futbol is boring because usually there are very few scores made, as it is not uncommon to have games of 0-0, 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1; but, in the opinion of fans, that is exactly what makes it interesting, because it is so difficult to score. Proudly, Elk City High School has both, a girls’ team and a boys’ team. The boys are coached by Jason Xenos, and the girls are coached by Zak Stamm.
