SAYRE EAGLE BASEBALL

The Sayre Eagle high school baseball team extended their conference schedule record to 5 wins no loses following two wins last week. The first win was at Cordell where the Eagles used a powerful performance on the mound by Rocky Willis who faced only 18 Blue Devil batters, striking out eleven and allowing only one hit in the 13 - 1 Eagle win. Ironically the hit he gave up was in the first inning and the batter made the circle to score the unearned run on a throwing error.

Then from the second inning through the fifth and final inning Willis faced only 13 batters and struck out 10 of those.Sayre scored in all five of their offensive innings with 3, 2, 1, 2 and 5 runs that added up to give them a 13 to 1 victory. Camden Plummer led the offense when he drew 5 walks in 5 at bats and scored on 4 of those. Willis helped his pitching cause when he got on base 4 times on 3 walks and one hit and scored on 3 of those. J.J. Beaird led in RBI’s with three.

The second game was against Mangum and it turned out to be an outstanding pitcher’s duel with the Eagles edging the Tigers 2 to 1. Lawson Simpson held the Tigers at bay giving up only one run in the third inning.

For the game Simpson gave up five hits while walking 3 and striking out 7. The Mangum pitcher gave up a run in the second and third inning. He finished the game giving up 2 runs and 2 hits while walking 4 and striking out 6 Eagle batters. Willis led off the second inning with a walk before stealing second base and then scored on a Mangum throwing error.

That came around to give Sayre the advantage as the next two batters for the Eagles struck out and the next batter flew out to the Tiger right fielder. The second run by Sayre came in the third inning where the Eagles collected their only two hits in the game.

With one out, Hunter Hanrahan singled then stole second base. The next out for Sayre was a strike out. With 2 outs Tate Bawden rapped a single that scored Hanrahan from second base and give the Eagle’s their second run in the game and a 2 to 1 lead. Mangum made an effort in the fifth inning to tie the score when they collected 2 hits that put runners at first and second base with one out.

The next batter flied out to Helton in right field and the runners advanced to third and second base with two outs. But Simpson iced the game when he struck out the next batter to end the contest and give Sayre a 2 to 1 win. New head coach Hunter Hines said he was well pleased with the effort and progress the team has made this year.
