Mooreland outlasts the Eagles

The Mooreland Bearcats spoiled the Sayre Homecoming event when they outscored the Eagles by the score of 44 to 24 last Friday evening on Eagle field. Mooreland took advantage of an Eagle fumble and a blocked punt both in the second quarter with each turnover leading to a touchdown by the Bearcats and a 20 to 0 halftime lead in the game. Mooreland scored TD’s on 6 of their 7 possessions in the game while Sayre put 3 touchdowns on the scoreboard on 3 of 3 possessions in the second half.

Sayre received the opening kickoff but were forced to punt after 3 plays failed to net a first down. A fourth down punt by Jaden Mosser sailed 32 yards to the Bearcat 32 where Mooreland began their first possession. The Bearcats used up ten plays to put their first TD on the board with the final 4 yards coming on a pass completion from QB Bodhi Allen to Stetson Roper. A try for the PAT came up short after a combined tackle by Brayden Mosburg and Zeke Curtis. With 4:25 left in the first quarter Mooreland led by a score of 6 to 0.

Following a sixteen yard return of the ensuing kickoff by Hunter Hanrahan the Eagles went on offense at the Mooreland 44 yard line. Sayre picked up a first down after 3 plays but was stopped short of a second one when 4 plays came up a yard short of another first down at the Mooreland 24. Mooreland gained a pair of first downs as they moved across the 50 yard line but the Eagles shut off the drive at the Sayre 47. A 33 yard punt put the Eagles back in business at their own 14 yard line. Sayre drove into Bearcat territory to their 49 but were forced to punt from there. The punt, however, was blocked by Grayson Bridges who also recovered the ball at the Eagle 42 yard line with 5:06 left in the first half. Mooreland took advantage of the situation when they quickly drove to the Eagle end zone in only 4 plays. The touchdown was a 24 yard run by QB Allen. Kaden Overton ran for the 2 point conversion and the score was 14 to 0 with 3:20 left in the second quarter. Zane Allen returned the ensuing kickoff 20 yards but an Eagle 10 yard penalty put the start of their next possession back at the Sayre 36. On the first play from scrimmage the Eagles fumbled the football and Carter Cummings recovered for the Bearcats at the Sayre 43. From there the Bearcats drove 6 plays into the Sayre end zone. The TD was a 17 yard run by Overton. A pass for the PAT connected and with 1:03 left in the first half the score had become a stunning 22 to 0. Two turnovers led to a pair of TD’s in less than 3 minutes to give the Bearcats a distinct advantage as the first half came to a close.

Mooreland received the second half kickoff and drove 65 yards in 7 plays to paydirt and after a run attempt failed for the PAT the score showed them in front 28 to 0 with 7:33 left in the third quarter. After the ensuing kickoff, the Eagles began their offensive possession from their own 30 yard line. On a well controlled drive of 70 yards, the Eagles put up their first TD of the evening. Zeke Curtis capped the TD with a one yard plunge. Jaden Mosser ran across the PAT and the score was 28 to 8 with 2:30 left in the third quarter.

Mooreland wasted no time in countering the Sayre TD with one of their own. From their own 30 they stormed 70 yards in only 3 plays for the score. The TD was a 54 yard run by Bridges. A pass connected for the PAT and the score was upped to 36 to 8 with 0:55 left in the third quarter. J. Mosser returned the ensuing kickoff 12 yards to the Sayre 34 for the Eagles next possession.. The Eagle machine cranked out another smooth march to paydirt in ten plays. The TD was a 6 yard slant by Coy Capehart into the end zone. J. Mosser ran across the goal line for the PAT and the score read 36 to 16 with 8:50 left in the fourth quarter.

Following the ensuing kickoff Mooreland again counter punched when they rambled 49 yards for a touchdown in 7 plays. The TD was a 21 yard run by Bridges. He also ran successfully for the PAT and the score was now 44 to 16 with 5:18 left in the game. After the ensuing kickoff the Eagles displayed another resilient offensive possession by rumbling 60 yards for their third TD of the evening. Ayden Hendershot slammed the final yard and after a pass connection from QB Ryan Johnston to Hanrahan 2 extra points were added with 0:39 left in the game. The final score ended 44 to 24. The second half played by Sayre showed them to be on equal footing with Mooreland but the two turnovers in the first half plus a mouthful of penalties (10 for 75 yards) in the game was the difference. Sayre now holds a 2 win 5 loss record with Texoma coming up this Friday at Texoma in a 7 PM start. Mooreland now holds a 3 win 5 loss record. Texoma defeated Sayre last year 44 to 20.
