Did you know that… October 23rd through 31st is “Red Ribbon Week”. You might be asking yourself what is Red Ribbon Week?
Well let me tell you, “Since its beginning in 1985, the Red Ribbon has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America” (https://www.redribbon.org/about ).
Red Ribbon week is about making people aware of the dangers of drug use, advocating for the safety and wellbeing of our communities, and providing information and resources to schools and communities.
The South Western Oklahoma Development Authority is getting very involved with Red Ribbon week and to find out about some of the activities going on in your community please visit https://www.swoda. org/substance-use-prevention- treatment-and-recovery/ prevention/odmhsas/red-ribbon- week-2023 . We hope that you will get involved with these efforts and please reach out to Kendra Gift, Assistant Project Manager for Prevention ([email protected]) with any questions that you might have.
These grants are funded by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, SWODA, and local coalitions.
