The Elk City Chamber of Commerce’s Breakfast Club was held in Homestead Assisted Living of Elk City last Thursday morning. The assisted living center provided breakfast for local businesses and chamber members. Emcee Basil Weatherly opened the meeting, while the invocation was given by Kevin Akins, pastor of the First Assembly of God Church, and Weatherly led the flag salute.
Executive Director of the Chamber, Susie Cupp, gave an update of activities throughout the town. She spoke about Dolly Day at the library that celebrates Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program. The Halloween Haunted Trail was also mentioned. It will take place Oct. 21st, at 1222 W. Lakeview Road from 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., and the cost is $10. It will support the Elk City High School senior class, and it is sponsored by GAS.
Cupp also talked about the Moonlight Madness that will be held Thursday, Oct 26th, in the parking lot behind the Chamber building. They will have vendors and trick or treating in the stores. This year they have changed the dog costume contest to the pet costume contest with the stipulation that the animal must be on a leash. The pink tractor will also be there for hayrides around downtown Elk City.
The day after Thanksgiving the Christmas lights will be turned on, and activities will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. through the season. Dec. 15th and 16th the chamber will sponsor a “PopUp Shop” in the tennis courts. This is the first time they have done this, therefore, Cupp encouraged everyone to stop by the park to shop. She also noted that they have had three ribbon cuttings. Finally, she said that the annual Chamber banquet is Jan. 16th.
Sherri Horn reported on Leadership Class IX’s graduation that took place earlier in the week. She gave a rundown of their activities and encouraged others to apply to be a part of the next class. Horn also talked about the Western Oklahoma Alzheimer’s Collaborative. The organization is there to support families and individuals who suffer from the health problem.
Liberty McArthur was there from Western Oklahoma Family Care Center. She talked about Christie’s Thrift store, the free medical, dental, and pharmacy available at the center. She also told the group about the homeless day room and how it is being utilized more than when it first opened.
Ashley Underwood from Red Carpet Community Theatre gave the chamber members a rundown about the upcoming production of “Miracle on 34th Street.” The show opens Nov. 10th and runs the 11th, 12th, 17th, 18th, and 19th. She also said that the theatre will be having a Christmas fundraiser program in Dec.
Next was Matt Bradshaw from the Arrowhead Center. He talked about the Western Oklahoma Bulls. Their first games are Nov. 4th and 5th at the Arrowhead. Joe McConnell followed Bradshaw with what is happening at the Elk City Motorsports Park. He said that they were holding a two-day event over the weekend. They had free pancakes, vendors, Hot Wheels races, and concessions. They will have one more race.
Comforting Hands Hospice will be hosting the Community Christmas Memorial service on Dec. 1st from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This will be for anyone who has lost a loved one, and it will help honor and remember him/her. Friday, Nov. 5th they will be hosting a drive through donuts and coffee for veterans.
