Membership Drive
Deanna Jones comes from a long line of military service. Her grandfather served in World War II. She had an uncle who died in Vietnam and her father served in the Air Force.
For that reason, her mother Billie has been involved in the American Legion Post 146 for her entire life.
“The American Legion is open to spouses of military members or anyone who wants to support them,” Jones said. “We had several members who were actively involved for many years, but several of them have died recently. We need new members. What we are doing is still important. We help service members and their families, but we also do things locally. There are so many good things about being involved in this. If you want to be involved in something that is patriotic, this is the group. We love America. That is our whole mission.”
This group helps sponsor Sayre’s girls who go to Girls State. Jones herself was able to go in 1987 and says that it has helped her understand how a community works.
“You go in the summer between your junior and senior year of high school,” Jones explained. “It teaches you civic duty. You elect people for city, county, and statewide office. You even get to hold mock trials. It is a wonderful way to foster excitement to be involved in your community.”
The Sayre program even helps throw a baby shower for women in the military.
“We are planing to actually put out the poppies this year. We will be in downtown Sayre at Halloween passing out candy and crayons. Anyone interested in joining should contact us,” Jones said.
