Sayre Band Continue March to Greatness

Sayre High School Band Director Tim Martin knows where his students excel.

Sayre High School Band Director Tim Martin knows where his students excel.

“We are a parade school,” he gushed. “This started years ago, but that has been our focus. And, we do good at it. Our kids really show up for that. They have put in the work. They are talented. And the evidence is clearly in how they score.”

Martin, a Woodward native, started playing in his school band as a child. Although his parents weren’t musicians, his uncle was a band director and his older siblings were “band kids.”

“I would say that it has always been what I wanted to do,” Martin said.

He knew when he came to Sayre ten years ago that he was working with a talented group and a good community.

“These kids continue to impress me,” Martin added.

The SHS fall parade season has proved fruitful for Martin and his students.

“Sayre has never done the band formations at footballs games. Years ago, Mr. Matthews decided that we would do parades. These kids are really, really good at that. I think that can be seen in what we have done so far,” Martin explained.

First, the Sayre Eagles have gone to the Oklahoma State Fair.

“I think we were the best at the parade, but the scores show that we were,” Martin said.

The band received first place in the 3A. “Our drum major, Lexie Hanarahn, also received first in 3A. Plus, our band was the Grand Champion. That means we had the highest score. We competed against bands up to 5A,” Martin said.

Next, the SHS Eagles soared at the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Homecoming Parade, “We got Outstanding Music and Color Guard. We got the Grand Champion with the highest score,” Martin detailed.

The Sayre Band Boosters will be selling street tacos at the Sayre Homecoming Game.
