Sayre vs Fairview

The Sayre Eagles made the long road trip to Fairview last Friday evening where they were soundly defeated by the # 1 team in class A, Yellowjackets, by the score of 69 to 8. The powerful Yellowjacket team rolled up 242 yards rushing and 257 yards passing against the Eagles as they scored in every quarter of the contest. The Eagles’ pile driving running back, Ayden Hendershot had a good performance against the # 1 team when he rammed ahead 35 times for 154 yards and a 4.4 yard per carry average. Hendershot scored the Eagles only touchdown on a one yard plunge late in the fourth quarter following a ten play march that began on the Sayre 28 yard line. Camden Plummer tacked on the 2 point PAT giving the Eagles their 8 points for the night.

Sayre received the opening kickoff but after their first 3 plays were forced to punt to the Jackets. Fairview went on their first offensive possession at the Eagle 48 from where they scored a 48 yard TD run on the first play from scrimmage. The PAT kick was good and Fairview took the early lead at 7 to 0.

Following the ensuing kickoff the Eagles failed again to gain a first down in 3 plays before Jaden Mosser punted 18 yards to the Eagle 47 yard line. Fairview put up their second TD of the night in 4 plays on a 18 yard pass play from QB Jax Bernard to Easton Hamar. The PAT kick was good and the score was upped to 14 to 0 with 8:13 left in the first quarter.

Sayre took the ensuing kickoff at their own eleven and picked up their first 1st down on 2 plays. But the drive stalled forcing a 25 yard punt out to the Eagle 46 from J. Mosser. Fairview used the airway again by scoring on a 34 yard pass from Bernard to Isaiah Burris. The PAT failed leaving the score at 20 to 0 with 5:31 left in the quarter. Hunter Hanrahan returned the ensuing kickoff 7 yards out to the Eagle 34. Once again Sayre failed to gain a first down and Ryan Johnston punted 32 yards to the Jacket 39. On the second play from there, Fairview fumbled the ball and Hanrahan recovered for Sayre at the Fairview 39. Sayre next mounted a seven play drive that moved the Eagles to the Yellowjacket 13 but a fumble turned the ball back to Fairview at the Fairview 17 yard line. Fairview then churned out a 83 yard TD drive that took 8 plays and a one yard plunge by Grant Church. The PAT kick was good and the scoreboard read 27 to 0 with 9:32 left in the first half. The ensuing kickoff set Sayre up at their own 22 for their next offensive possession. Three plays netted only 2 yards and on fourth down the Eagles punted for the fifth time in the game. Johnston’s punt was good for 32 yards to the Fairview 46 where the Jackets took possession. On first down Fairview performed a shocking 54 yard TD play on first down. The TD was from Bernard to Burris. The PAT kick was good and the score now read 34 to 0 with 7:30 to go in the first half.

Zane Allen returned the ensuing kickoff 21 yards from the Eagle 20 to the 41 to give Sayre their best field position on the night. Sayre gained 31 yards on 5 straight Hendershot carries but a fumbled exchange on the next play was recovered by Fairview at the Jacket 29. The Fairview offense continued to over power the Eagle defense when they drove from their 29 to the Eagle end zone in seven plays. The TD was a 9 yard pass from Bernard to Reed Martens. The PAT kick was good and at halftime the score read 41 to 0.

On the kickoff to open the second half Burris caught the kick at the Fairview 25 and stormed 75 yards to paydirt. The PAT was good and the score read 48 to 0 with 11:48 to in the third quarter. After a return of 7 yards on the ensuing kickoff by Devin Mosser Sayre covered 8 yards in two plays but on the third play a fumble occurred and Fairview recovered at the Eagle 37. Six plays later the Jackets put their eighth TD on the scoreboard when Bernard took the ball in from one yard out. Again the PAT was good and the score read 55 to 0 with 7:48 left in the third quarter. Fairview scored early in the fourth quarter and after the ensuing kickoff the Eagles cranked up their only scoring drive of the night. Beginning from their own 28 Sayre the march to paydirt took ten plays. Hendershot squeezed into the end zone from one yard out. Plummer ran across the PAT to make the score 62 to 8. Fairview scored their final TD with 0:31 left before the game ended 69 to 8. Brock Helton led the Eagles in tackles with 7 while Zeke Curtis and Dustin McSorley tallied 6 tackles each. The Eagles will play at home this Thursday against Merritt. Merritt defeated Sayre last year 48 to 28. Merritt are 2 wins and 4 loses thus far this season. Sayre hold a record of one win and 4 loses.
