The Sayre Eagles took on the Hooker Bulldogs at Eagle Field where they were upended by the score of 49 to 6 last Friday evening. The score does not reflect the exciting and disciplined play in the first half when the Eagles controlled 17 of the 24 first half minutes of the game clock by going on a pair of long distance drives of 14 and 21 plays each. The first one began at the Sayre 16 yard line following the opening kickoff and ended in a touchdown when Ayden Hendershot plunged into the end zone from 3 yards out. Hooker took the ensuing kickoff and 13 plays later matched the Eagle score when Justin Palacios carried the ball into the end zone from one yard out.
Sayre took the ensuing kickoff and methodically ground out 67 yards from their own 28 to the Bulldog 5 yard line on 21 plays before Hooker managed to keep the Eagles out of their end zone on a fourth down play. Hooker had 31 seconds to push the ball out to the 50 yard line before the first half ended with the score tied at 6 to 6.
The second half became a nightmare for Sayre early when the Eagles attempted an on-side kickoff to begin the third quarter. But Hooker was able to cover up the ball at their own 47 for good field position. The first play from there was indicative of what was to come when on first down Palacious slipped threw a gap in the line and roared 53 yards for the first of 6 second half touchdowns to be made by the Bulldogs. A pass for the PAT was good and Hooker had a 14 to 6 lead with only 16 seconds elapsed from the clock in the third quarter. After the ensuing kickoff Sayre ran 3 plays before a fourth down punt by Jaden Mosser gave Hooker the ball at their own 35. On first down another electrifying run took place when QB Kleat Martens went on a 60 yard dash before Zane Allen could run him down. Allen stripped the ball loose as he made the tackle at the Eagle ten yard line . Camden Plummer was there to recover the ball at the Eagle 5 yard line. Sayre traveled from the 5 yard line out to the Eagle 41 where a fourth down fake punt ended in a six yard lose at the Sayre 35. The Eagles were unable to control the ball in the second half as they did in the first half and as a result Hooker was able to gear up their high powered offense and go on a scoring run that was not to be stopped. From the Sayre 35 Hooker took just 2 plays to score again. This time Palacious rambled 33 yards for the score. A pass for the PAT was good and the score now read 22 to 6. On the ensuing kickoff the Eagles began their offensive possession at their own 10 yard line. A 5 yard penalty set the ball back to the 5 yard line. A two yard loss on first down and another penalty put the ball at their own 2 yard line. A fourth down punt play became a fumble after the snap of the ball. Hooker tackled punter Jaden Mosser in the end zone which resulted in a 2 point safety for the Bulldogs raising the score to 24 - 6.
Sayre had to kickoff to Hooker following the safety. Hooker returned the kick 29 yards to the Sayre 40. The Bulldogs ran three plays before the fourth play of the drive was a 25 yard TD pass play. The score was 30 to 6 as the game moved into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter there was one bright spot for Sayre after stopping Hooker from scoring followingtheir drive to the Eagle 5 yard line. On first down Sayres workhorse Ayden Hendershot broke a couple of tackles before galloping 87 yards to the Hooker 8 yard line. But the drive failed when on fourth down at the Hooker 1 yard line the Eagles were denied a TD by the Bulldog defense. Hooker took possession at the one. After 2 plays netted 7 yards to the 8 Palacios romped for a 92 yard TD. The nightmare continued when Sayre fumbled on first down following the ensuing kickoff at the Eagle 20. On first down Hooker QB Martens ran the distance to the end zone raising the score to 43 to 6. Sayre ran 3 unsuccessful plays following the kickoff and on the fourth down an Eagle punt was blocked and the ball was recovered by Hooker in the Eagle end zone to give them their final TD of the night. Sayres second half nightmare ended with Hooker taking the win by the score of 49 to 6. TheEaglelinemenkeptthe ball rolling in the first half. These determined linemen were Parker Harrell, Deontaye Thomas, Cade Renner, Nevan Bailey and Triston Easter. In that dominating first half the Eagles showed what they can accomplish with a stellar performance. Ayden Hendershot led the Eagle ground game with 169 yards on 27 carries. Devin Mosser followed with 75 yards on 13 carries. Zane Allen, Brock Helton, Devin Mosser, and Dustin McSorley all led in tackles with 7 each. Sayre will travel to Fairview to face the undefeated Yellowjackets. Fairview defeated the Eagles in last years contest.
