The Sayre Eagle football team traveled to Thomas to engage in their first district contest where they were tamed by the Terriers 40 to 16 last Friday evening. Thomas picked up the first of their 6 touchdowns on the night in the first quarter of play and added three more in the second quarter to take a 26 - 0 halftime lead over the Eagles.

Sayre received the opening kickoff when Thomas attempted to catch the Eagles napping by using an on-side 10 yard kick, but Mathew Wynn was quick to pounce on the ball giving Sayre good field position at the Eagle 47 yard line to start their first offensive possession. After 3 plays netted only 3 yards, Sayre was forced to punt. Jaden Moser booted 25 yards from the 50 yard line to the Thomas 25. Sayre met the Terriers headon by giving up only 4 yards in 3 downs. A fourth down punt by the Terriers was a massive 61 yards by Isaac Miller to the Eagle ten yard line. Before their first play from the 10 the Eagles were assessed a 5 yard penalty which set the ball back to the 5 yard line. From that point the Eagles marched 35 yards out to their own 40 in nine plays before running out of downs. Moser punted 26 yards into a stiff wind to give Thomas their second possession of the game at the Terrier 34.

Thomas went on a nine play 66 yard scoring drive with the TD a 19 yard run by Warren Cometsevah. Miller kicked the PAT and Thomas led 7 to 0 with 1:06 left in the first quarter. Devin Moser returned the ensuing kickoff 6 yards to the Sayre 15 yard line. Three plays lost 4 yards before J. Moser punted on 4th down. The ball flew 28 yards once again into a strong wind to the Eagle 43 where Zack Clancy picked up the ball and returned it 3 yards to the Sayre 40.

Thomas cranked out their second TD of the night by going the distance in 8 plays with the score coming on a Tye Littlebird 15 yard pass to Gage Wright. Miller kicked the PAT and the score now read 14 to 0 with 8:13 left in the first half of play.

After another on-side kickoff attempt by Thomas the Eagles’ Brayden Mosburg wrapped the ball up at the Sayre 45 yard line. The Eagles gained one first down before letting a 10 yard penalty stymie their possession. The punt was only for 14 yards to the Thomas 34 where the Terriers took possession to begin their third touchdown drive. This time Thomas took only 5 plays to find paydirt which culminated on a 55 yard scamper by Wright. The PAT kick failed leaving the score at 20 to 0 with 4:13 left in the first half.

Another attempted onside kickoff by Thomas was covered by Camden Plummer at the Sayre 40 yard line. Once again Sayre was confronted by a stone wall defense and was forced to punt after 3 plays failed to gain a yard. J. Moser punted 38 yards to the Thomas 22 yard line. The Terriers moved the ball into the Eagle end zone in 7 plays with the TD coming on a 12 yard run by QB Littlebird. The PAT kick failed and the score now read 26 to 0 with 0:43 left in the first half. Sayre managed one first down on a 10 yard pass from Ryan Johnston to Brayden Mosburg before the second quarter ended.

Thomas had control of the ball after the second half kickoff at the 50 yard line. The Eagle defense showed resistance when they allowed the Terriers only 4 yards in 3 plays. A fourth down punt by Wright was 19 yards to the Sayre 27. A determined Eagle offense reeled off 73 yards on 12 plays to put up their first points of the game. The score was a 7 yard smash by Ayden Hendershot. Hendershot also ran for the PAT and the score was now 26 to 8 with 4:10 left in the third quarter.

Thomas fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Dustin Mc-Sorley recovered for Sayre at the Thomas 38 yard line. An inspired Eagle offense took advantage of the turnover and quickly marched into the Thomas end zone in 5 plays. The TD was a 5 yard slant by Hunter Hanrahan. Hendershot ran across the 2 point PAT and the score was suddenly 26 to 16 with 2:08 left in the third quarter.

The Eagle momentum was soon extinguished when the Terriers took the ensuing kickoff and marched 63 yards to for a TD. The TD was a 55 yard pass from Littlebird to Clancy and following the PAT kick Thomas had upped their lead to 33 to 16 with 11:51 left in the game. Thomas scored once more in the fourth quarter and the final score became 40 to 16. Ayden Hendershot led the team in rushing with 107 yards on 19 carries. D.
