Beckham/Roger Mills Unit of Oklahoma Retired Educators met September 8 at Elk City United Methodist Church. President Linda Long welcomed Karen Whitely, Sharon Gilliland, Tana Feldman, Dennis McRee, Mary Fern Carpenter, Janice Mollet, Sharon Thompson, Jan Attocknie, Gwen Pasby, Larry Long, Carla Garrison, Glenda Ivins, Judy Haught, Cathy Lewis and guests, Pam Holland, Dean Holland, and Julie Lenius to the first meeting of the 2023-24 school year.

Beckham/Roger Mills Unit of Oklahoma Retired Educators met September 8 at Elk City United Methodist Church. President Linda Long welcomed Karen Whitely, Sharon Gilliland, Tana Feldman, Dennis McRee, Mary Fern Carpenter, Janice Mollet, Sharon Thompson, Jan Attocknie, Gwen Pasby, Larry Long, Carla Garrison, Glenda Ivins, Judy Haught, Cathy Lewis and guests, Pam Holland, Dean Holland, and Julie Lenius to the first meeting of the 2023-24 school year.

Gwen gave the invocation. Judy led the flag Salutes. Members sang the Happy Birthday song to Dean, Sharon, Linda, Larry and Janice who celebrated birthdays in July and August. Tana presented the devotional by reading a heartwarming poem for retired or retiring teachers from Jill Eisnaugle’s Poetry Collection 2007. She concluded her devotional with a prayer.

Julie Lenius, Dist. Rep. of Oklahoma Route 66 Association, presented a very interesting program by sharing several delightful Route 66 Happenings. The 400+ miles of The Mother Road that runs through Oklahoma holds hours of fun and discovery. The Oklahoma Route 66 Association has a mission to celebrate and preserve Route 66 in Oklahoma through education, promotion, and advocacy, ensuring the future of the Mother Road while honoring its community and history. The Association provides a 2023-2024 Route 66 Trip Guide that is available at the Museum Gift Shop. Online information is available at www. oklahomaroute66.com.

The minutes were approved as presented. The treasurer’s reported was accepted as read. Information from the scholarship committee revealed that there were no applicants from those doing student teaching in the fall semester. In membership, Glenda reported 41 members. In the Membership Minute, she noted a benefit for OREA members. Through AMBA, members can leave a legacy for their family or their school with Life Insurance.
