North Carolina man charged with two counts of possession of a firearm after a felony conviction

A 30-year-old North Carolina man has been bonded out of the Beckham County Detention Center after being charged with two felony charges of a felon in possession of a firearm.

A 30-year-old North Carolina man has been bonded out of the Beckham County Detention Center after being charged with two felony charges of a felon in possession of a firearm.

A Beckham County Sheriff’s Department deputy reportedly spotted a serving vehicle on I-40 at approximately 3:19 am on July 25.

The deputy pulled the 2023 Nissan bearing North Carolina tags over.

Nicholas Alexander Schmidt reportedly wrote down his birthdate and information, allegedly stating he didn’t have identifi cation with him.

The deputy was assisted by a second BCSO deputy. They allegedly found two vehicles, one of which was an ARstyle gun, along with binoculars and an extra magazine.

Schmidt allegedly admitted to knowing the smaller gun was in the car, but denied being aware of the AR-style gun.

He also reportedly said the guns belonged to the man he had rented the vehicle from.

Dispatch confirmed that Schmidt is a felon.
