The Legislature officially adjourned “sine die” on Friday, May 26, at 5 p.m. We’ve had a very successful session and passed bills covering everything from education to election protection to economic development.

I am grateful to announce that Gov. Stitt has signed three of my bills into law: House Bill 2084, House Bill 2335, and House Bill 2339. It’s been an honor to work with my fellow legislators to get these bills across the finish line.

Throughout session, I’ve worked hard on Senate Bill 193, which provides six weeks of paid maternity leave for full-time state employees following the birth or adoption of a child.

The Senate accepted the conference committee amendments on Wednesday; however, the bill is no longer in play for the legislative session. But that is not the end. The language has moved to Senate Bill 16X so that it can be heard during the concurrent special session.

Through interim studies, we have learned that signifi-cant issues impact our state’s workforce, especially women, who have been the most considerable population to leave the workforce in recent years. In 2021 employee turnover cost the state $110 million, and a portion of those employees were women who quit following the birth of a child.

As the largest employer in the state, Oklahoma should be the leader in supporting mothers and families. Even though SB193 is no longer alive, I am hopeful SB16X will receive final passage and ultimately be signed into law by the governor.

Even though the regular session is over, lawmakers in the House and Senate have called for a concurrent special session that started meeting last week. The concurrent special session will allow us to finalize this year’s budget and meet after the constitutional adjournment date of May 26 if necessary.

With my first session in the rearview mirror, I’m thankful for all that I’ve learned about the legislative process this year, and I’m excited to use the knowledge and skillset I’ve gained this year to continue to serve District 55.

During the interim, I plan to transition to monthly columns to keep you updated on things happening in District 55 and at the Capitol. It is truly an honor and privilege to represent you at the State Capitol. As always, please do not __hesitate to reach out to me with any concerns at (405) 557-7312 or nick.archer@okhouse. gov.

Nick Archer, a Republican, serves House District 55 in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, which covers Beckham, Blaine, Caddo, Canadian and Washita counties.
