In the Garden with Mama is a story written by Nancy Davis about her mother 'Mama' Roberta Davis's life. A humble and kind person, Mama was raised in a big family during the great depression in the hills of Missouri. After graduating high school in 1952, she traveled to Oklahoma to attend Southern Nazarene University in Bethany. To help pay for her col, ege, she took a job at the Wesley Hospjtal in OKC as a nurse aid. Mama was encouraged by the Director of Nurses to enroll in their nursing program. During her training, she met and started dating a handsome W'{VII soldier. The last year of her training they married and moved to his family's cotton farm east of Elk City. The simple life on a farm was ideal for a young family with 5 kids.
After becoming a widow, Mama moved to Sayre to raise her five children as a single parent. She did marry again and had two more children. In the 70's, she was known as one of Sayre's Avon ladies. She was also known to walk every day. Mama often told of how people would ask her if she needed a ride as she did her daily walk on 4th street. During her walks she would often go through the hospital to visit patients.
The story outlines how being raised in a large supportive family in Missouri helped Mama guide her children and how that support impacted her children's life choices. Mama had a gift of being kind and she shared that gift of kindness with everyone she knew.
Nancy Davis graduated from SWOSU with her bachelor's degree in nursing. Her career as an RN started in Elk City while she was raising her family and continued to Wichita Falls after moving there in 2004 The book is on the shelf at the Sayre Library.
