“In the Garden with Mama”

“In the Garden with Mama” is a story written by author/ daughter Nancy Davis about her mother 'Mama' Roberta Davis's life. A humble and kind person, Mama was raised in a big family during the great depression in the hills of Missouri. In 1952 after graduating high school, traveled on a bus to Oklahoma to attend Southern Nazarene University in Bethany.

To help pay for her college, she worked at the Wesley Hospital in OKC as a nurse aid. Mama was then encouraged by the Director of Nurses to enroll in their nursing program. During her training, she met and started dating a handsome WWII soldier. The last year of her training they married and then moved to his family's cotton farm east of Elk City. The simple life on a farm was ideal for a young family with 5 kids.

The story outlines how being raised in a large supportive family helped Mama guide her through the many challenges and sacrifices she had to make over the years. Mama had a gift of being kind and she shared that gift of kindness with everyone she knew. She was very close with her family and was willing to help when needed. A time when Mama was needed was when her grandson BJ Morgan was born. He was born premature and had Cerebral Palsy. Since Mama was raised in a large family and had nursing experience, it really helped. Since Mama helped in BJ's early years of his life, her positive, happy attitude, can also be seen in BJ's attitude; always smiling and happy. BJ is a 1998 graduate of Elk City High School.

The book js available at the Carnegie Library and can be bought on Amazon.

Nancy graduated from SWOSU with her bachelor'sdegree in nursing. Her career as an RN started in Elk City while she was raising her family and continued in Wichita Falls after moving there in 2004.
