“You Might As Well Jump” on Down to the Red Carpet Community Theatre for The Wedding Singer —You Just Can’t “Beat It”!

If you miss the 80s—or just want to see what all the fuss was about— you might as well jump on down to the Red Carpet Community Theatre for their fantastic production of The Wedding Singer. Sponsored by Hutton Inc., this past weekend the local community theatre transported audiences back to concert T-shirts, big hair (and boy is there some big hair in this show!), and iconic 80s charm. The show is a joyous, nostalgic romp, and if you missed it, don’t worry—there are three more chances to catch it this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Directed by Christy Russell- Dobbs, this production was a perfect balance of energy, charm, and heartfelt moments. Under her direction, the cast brought the quirky, fun, and romantic spirit of the 80s to life.

Cassidy Crabb’s return to the stage was a definite highlight. She brought a laid-back confidence to her role that made her scenes a joy to watch. Her on-stage chemistry with Samuel Grinder, who played the guitar-strumming lead opposite her, was both engaging and endearing. Grinder’s live guitar performances added a delightful touch of authenticity, making his character feel all the more real.

One of the great things about community theatre is how it brings together a mix of seasoned performers and new talent. This production was a perfect example, with a few familiar faces shining alongside fresh ones who are clearly on their way to becoming audience favorites. It’s always exciting to see that blend in action, and this show delivered it beautifully.

The technical elements of the production struck a fine balance between simplicity and effectiveness. The stage, upon first glance, seemed plain and unencumbered— a departure from more elaborate designs. But this choice proved to be a smart one, offering the perfect canvas for the director’s vision. It also allowed the larger musical numbers to shine without unnecessary distractions. The choreography brought a dynamic energy to the show, blending classic Broadway-inspired moves with touches of 80s hip-hop flair. This mix added authenticity and flair, making the dance sequences a joy to watch.

Lighting design was simple yet effective, enhancing each scene without overpowering the action. The balance between the production’s music and the stage performances was well-executed. However, at times, it was a struggle to hear the voices clearly in the theater’s acoustical space. Stronger vocal projection would have ensured that every lyric and line of dialogue connected fully with the audience.

The costumes were pure 80s gold. From Boy George’s bold flair to Madonna’s iconic looks, the wardrobe was like a greatest-hits album of 80s fashion. Each outfit was a little visual time machine, bringing the audience right into the era with a wink and a smile. They weren’t just costumes—they were part of the fun, adding personality and charm to every scene.

One of the great things about this show were the surprises—famous faces from the 80s who might remind you of leadership at the highest level, a love for collecting something stylish, a rock icon who redefined cool, or a duo whose chemistry made them household names. These moments, delivered with a healthy dose of humor, had the audience laughing and clapping with delight.

Another treat for theatergoers was the selection of cookies and desserts provided by Simply Desserts. A trip to Red Carpet Community Theatre isn’t complete without sampling these incredible offerings, which added an extra touch of sweetness to an already delightful evening.

If you’re looking for a night to forget your worries and relive the joy of the 80s, this show is the perfect escape. Whether you want to relive the 80s or finally see what all the fuss was about if you weren’t alive back then, The Wedding Singer delivers a vibrant, feelgood experience that’s not to be missed.
