FISHING UPDATE

TROUT STOCKING NOW UNDERWAY

Trout stocking in Oklahoma had a late start this year. Stocking is tentative based on flooding, water temperatures, trout availability, road conditions and other unforeseen circumstances. Due to recent drought conditions and warm weather, stocking has been delayed until now. Be sure to buy your fishing license and check the regulations to stay in the know.

You can find Department trout fishing areas at Robbers Cave, Sunset Lake, Medicine Creek, Lake Watonga, Turtle Pond and Blue River. Three Close to Home Fishing areas began getting stocked on Dec. 1: Route 66 Park, Edwards Park and Veterans Park.

For more tips and tricks, check the Trout Information page on the ODWC website.

TROUT TIPS AND TRICKS

In lakes, ponds and streams with little to no current, bait fished off the bottom is typically the most productive at getting bites. The basic setup for trout when using a bottom- fishing approach is a 6-foot to 7-foot, medium- to medium-light-action rod and a reel spooled with 6- to 8-pound monofilament line.

Recommended bait: Power Bait eggs Bait paste Corn Inline spinners Soft plastics on a small jig head

TROUT FISHING DERBY

The Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a trout derby Dec. 14 from noon to 2 p.m. at Route 66 Park. Anglers ages 5 to 15 will receive a free fishing pole from the Police Athletic League. Don’t miss out on the exhibitor booths along with the opportunity to fish and fellowship with other anglers.
