Elk City’s police station remodel will make the building more spacious and functional.
According to Assistant Police Chief John Cook, interior demolition is complete, and crews are framing internal walls, heat and air, and plumbing.
“A push now is to get the building ‘dried in’ so winter weather will lessen the impact on work progress,” Cook said.
Cook also said that the entrance is being expanded to better accommodate people with disabilities and look more inviting.
The building’s east side has new space for detectives’ offices for the Criminal Investigations Division.
“This includes a digital forensics room to ensure chain of custody on electronic devices and improved working area for the forensic processes associated with digital evidence,” Cook said.
The police department has expanded along with its mission since the building was completed in 1982, so the remodel will also provide much-needed space.
When the station was built 42 years ago, the police department had 12 certified officers. Nowit’sauthorized for 29.
“The department includes school resource officers, digital investigations, and the Sex Offender Registry, and it acts as the 911 call center,” Cook said. “The Elk City Police Department also dispatches the police, Elk City Fire/EMS, and rural fire departments from Foss to Carter.”
According to Cook, the projected remodel completion date is late July 2025, though winter weather could always cause delays.
In April 2023, Elk City voters approved repurposing an existing half-cent sales tax and extending it for eight years to fund police department and fire station expansion and upgrades.
