Caregivers are not alone in caring for loved ones

Each November, we take time to recognize and celebrate the dedication and hard work of family caregivers. At SWODA (South Western Oklahoma Development Authority) Area Agency on Aging (AAA), we believe caregivers should be appreciated year-round. This month, though, is a special opportunity to bring national attention to the challenges caregivers face and to remind them that they are not alone in their journey.

Caregiving can be rewarding but also demanding. That’s why, in partnership with the Oklahoma Human Services Aging Services Division, SWODA AAA offers respite services to support caregivers. Respite simply means taking a break, which is essential for caregivers’ well-being. Research shows that caregivers who take occasional breaks provide better care, maintain their health, and experience less stress.

Respite services allow caregivers a chance to step away, even just for a few hours, from their caregiving responsibilities. Whether they use the time to go to a doctor’s appointment, catch up with friends, enjoy a movie, or even take a well-deserved nap, respite offers caregivers the opportunity to recharge and care for themselves.

Caregivers, remember, you’re not alone. We are here to help you find the support you need to continue providing the best care for your loved ones. To apply for respite services, a caregiver can call Joanie, SWODA AAA, at 800-627-4882, ext 126, or directly at 580-562-5026. These services are funded in part by state and Older Americans Act funds from SWODA AAA and Oklahoma Human Services Aging Services Division.

It is policy of SWODA AAA to serve all individuals who are eligible for its programs without regard of race, national origin, ancestry, color, religion, gender, age or disability.

SWODA is one of 11 Councils of Government in the state. SWODA’s region of service includes municipalities, counties and conservation districts in Beckham, Custer, Greer, Harmon, Jackson, Kiowa, Roger Mills and Washita counties.
