Sayre Overcome By Cashion

The Sayre Eagle football team fell short in the fourth quarter to Cashion 35 to 14 on Senior night at Eagle field last Friday evening. Cashion built a 21 to 0 halftime lead before the Eagle’s offense fought back in the second half to close the gap to 21 to 14 midway in the fourth quarter. Sayre controlled the entire 12 minute third quarter when they scored their first touchdown at the 4:34 mark before recovering an onside kick off. The offense then commenced to drive for their second TD that was put on the scoreboard with 11:38 left in the fourth quarter.

Cashion tacked on their final 2 touchdowns, to bring the score to a final reading of 35 to 14.

Sayre kicked off to the Wildcats to start the game. Cashion returned the kick 10 yards to their own 42 where Zane Allen made the tackle. The Eagle defense gave up one first down to the Wildcats on a 20 yard run by Rival Fields to the Eagle 33. The Sayre defense prevented a fourth down pass attempt after that and took over on offense at their own 35. The Eagles marched to the Wildcat 36 before being forced to punt. The punt by Jaden Mosser ended up 36 yards into the Cashion end zone before the ball was brought out to the 20 yard line for the Wildcat offense. Cashion went on an 80 yard TD drive in ten plays.

The PAT kick by Adilee Jerry was true and the score read 7 to 0 with 2:56 left in the first quarter. Sayre began their next possession at their own 42 following the ensuing kickoff. Three plays netted only 6 yards before Mosser punted again this time 31 yards to the Wildcat 21. After a 4 yard return of the punt to the 25, Cashion began their second touchdown drive which covered 75 yards in 14 plays to the Eagle end zone. The PAT kick connected to bring the score to 14 to 0 with 7:55 left in the first half.

After the ensuing kickoff the Eagles ran two plays before a third down pass was intercepted and returned by Maxx Higdon to the Sayre 30. An attempted onside kick by Cashion was recovered by Zeke Curtis at the Eagle 47. From the 47 Sayre was stymied after 4 plays managed only two yards to the Eagle 49. The Eagle defense went to work and forced Cashion backward to the Wildcat 45 in 4 plays. With only 0:31 seconds left in the half the Eagles drove to the Cashion 3 yard line before the second quarter ended.

The Eagle offense came out determined when they received the second half kickoff and drove to the Cashion end zone in 14 plays with Mosser scoring the TD on a 7 yard run. Z. Allen ran across the 2 point conversion and Sayre had cut the Wildcat lead to 21 to 8 with 4:34 left in the third quarter. Sayre used an onside kickoff that worked when Camden Plummer recovered the ball at the Sayre 48 yard line. Sayre went on another slow grinding drive to the Cashion end zone in 13 plays.

The drive used up the remaining time of the third quarter and 22 seconds of the fourth quarter in the 52 yard march. The PAT run failed and Sayre had contracted the score to within 7 points at 20 to 14 with 11:38 to play in the game.
