The Sayre School Board held their October meeting last week on October 7.
The meeting was regularly scheduled.
It was also only the second meeting with a full school month since new SPS Superintendent Dee Wilhelm has taken leadership.
Board members have repeatedly told the Beckham County Record that they are impressed by Wilhelm so far.
Wilhelm, a veteran educator with vast experience but a firsttime superintendent, vocalized appreciation for the board’s support to BCR.
The meeting was approximately a half hour.
No one asked to speak publicly. Funding and bills are on par with last year.
Principal Brad Coffman advised the board of SPS’s low dropout rate.
Wilhelm said, “We are slightly below the county average, so our kids are doing well and sticking to school. I think Mr. Coffman said there were maybe three last year. Our ACT scores are also slightly higher than the county average, so just proud of our kids and teachers.”
Th eboardalsovotedtoapprove the creation of a police department within the school.
“What this means is we will have a CLEET certified officer who is here as a Sayre School employee as our school resource officer. It will not be through the Sherriff ’s office or the Sayre Police Department. Of course, we will all still work together, but this is just really in line with what a lot of schools are doing,” Wilhelm explained.
