A 48-year-old Sayre man is being held in the Beckham County Detention Center on a $30,000 bond after being charged with drug trafficking, drug distribution within 2,000 feet of a school, park, or recreational area, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.
On September 15, a Sayre Police Department officer reportedly observed Jose Angel Rodriguez walking at the Sayre Splash Pad with a backpack.
The officer exited his vehicle and reportedly informed Rodriguez of burglaries that had occurred in the area. The officer wrote that he explained that the suspects often carry backpacks.
“I asked Jose Angel Rodriguez if he knew any relevant information about recent burglaries or if he is actively concealing stolen items in his backpack that he is currently carrying,” the officer wrote.
Rodriguez reportedly stated that he had no information or stolen property.
The officer asked for consent to search the bag, which Rodriguez allegedly agreed to.
When being asked if the backpack contained any drugs, Rodriguez allegedly admitted to possessing marijuana.
The officer reported that he asked Rodriguez to empty his pockets. The officer stated that Rodriguez complied, but only handed over the contents of his left pocket while keeping the contents of his right pocket clinched in his hands.
The officer alleged that the contents of the right pocket were a plastic baggie with clear crystal-like substance and a small torch lighter.
Rodriguez allegedly claimed to have found the items while “dumpster diving.”
He also reportedly claimed to have found the backpack while “dumpster diving.”
The officer reportedly found pipes in the backpack as well as two plastic cylindrical containers with a substance believed to be marijuana.
The weight of the crystal substance was 2.6 grams. The officer wrote that a test showed the substance to have the presence of fentanyl.
