The Sayre Eagle football team traveled to Carnegie last Friday evening where they subdued the Wildcats with a score of 44 to 8. The Eagles scored in each of the four quarters played, while holding Carnegie to one touchdown that came on their first drive of the third quarter.
Other than giving up that one scoring drive by the Wildcats, the Eagles maintained the offensive position timewise most of the night as they scored on seven of their nine possessions in the game. Sayre used eight ball carriers while executing their 61 rushing attempts for a total of 462 yards.
Two Eagles toted the ball for 100 plus yards. Leading the rushing effort was Zane Allen, with 178 yards, followed by 105 yards from Dustin McSorley. Coy Capehart also added 90 yards in the game effort.
Sayre received the opening kickoff and quickly marched 64 yards in 5 plays for the games first touchdown. Zane Allen covered the final 8 yards to the end zone. Jaden Mosser carried across the 2 point conversion and the score read 8 to 0 with 10:00 left in the first quarter. The ensuing kickoff put Carnegie on offense at their own 36 yard line.
On first down, the Wildcats executed their longest play of the evening with a 35 yard pass from Weston Burcum to Kevin Galvez, but the drive ended 3 plays later when a fourth down pass fell incomplete. Sayre took over at their own 23 yard line and commenced to roar 77 yards in 13 plays to the end zone while overcoming 3 ten yard penalties in the process. Capehart found paydirt on the final play on a 6 yard run and after Zeke Curtis tacked on the 2 point conversion the Eagles led 16 to 0 with 0:45 left in the first quarter.
Following Aiden Ball’s kickoff to Carnegie, the Wildcats were set back 7 yards in 3 plays forcing them to punt from their own 33 to the Sayre 37. From there the Eagles went on another slow grinding TD drive in 14 plays with Hunter Hanrahan plunging the last one yard into the end zone.
The PAT attempt failed and the score now read 22 - 0 with 4:40 left in the first half of play. The Eagles lost the ball 2 times by interception in the final two possessions before halftime.
Sayre kicked off to start the second half and Carnegie began their best offensive possession from their own 43.
Overcoming one 5 yard penalty the Wildcats took 12 plays to find the paydirt and reached it on a 14 yard pass play from Weston Burcum to Heston Harrison.
After the ensuing kickoff the Eagles were set to begin a 65 yard TD from their own 35. Following a 5 yard penalty against the Wildcats the ball was advanced to the 40. Then on first down Zane Allen shook loose and roared 41 yards to the Carnegie 19. Two plays later McSorley ran 9 yards for the TD.
The PAT failed and the score now read 28 to 8 with 7:00 left in the third quarter. After the ensuing kickoff Carnegie began their possession from their own 21 and drove to the Eagle 40 but a pass from there was intercepted when Zeke Curtis leaped in front of the receiver to make the grab of the pass at the 29. He then returned the ball to the Eagle 40. Sayre wasted no time from there when they covered the 60 yards to the end zone in only 4 plays.
Curtis got the call on the last play of the drive and smashed for the final eleven yards of the touchdown drive. McSorley tacked on the 2 extra points to give Sayre a 36 to 8 lead.
Sayre’s final touchdown came on a late drive of 58 yards in the fourth quarter. Coy Capehart ran through the line for the final 5 yards and after Hanrahan ran across the PAT the final score read 44 to 8. The Eagles run a double wing offensive scheme and it has been a highly successful force against an opponents defense. The credit for the running backs success in this formation, starts with linemen Kaden Beaird, Alex Chavez. Stone Mackey, Nevan Bailey and Triston Easter. Brayden Mosburg and Tate Bawden hold down the end positions. The Eagles will not play this Friday but will entertain Hooker on the Eagle field Friday Sept 27. Hooker defeated the Eagles last year.
