Elk City is upgrading its airport facilities.
Ground was broken last April for the $6.5 million construction project that’s funded by the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics, the City of Elk City, and the Federal Aviation Administration.
The City’s part will be $2.7 million, with the other $3.8 million coming from state and federal grants.
Airport upgrades include a taxilane expansion and building a 3,600-square-foot terminal to replace the existing one that was built in 1966. The old terminal will eventually be demolished to expand available apron parking for aircraft.
“The Elk City Regional Airport has a $5.7 million economic impact on our community,” State Representative Nick Archer told the ODAA. “By replacing our 1966 terminal, we are getting a new front door to our city that will serve us for decades.”
A 15,000-sqare-foot hangar will also be built to accommodate midsize business jets.
“The movers and shakers, the people who bring business to a town, don’t come in on the Greyhound bus,” said Bobby Southard, Elk City Airport Chairman. “They come to town from the airport, and now we will be able to make a great first impression.”
Airport construction is expected to be completed by the middle of next year.
