The Elk City School Board’s April meeting was mainly standard housekeeping and preparing for the 2022-2023 school year’s end.
During the financial report, board members and Superintendent Mike Sparks focused on changing funding plans as Covid relief money expires.
Sparks also noted that gross production revenue has taken a downturn but remains up for the year.
“For three straight months, that came in around $59,000. But, for the last two months, it has been under $30,000. So we are still on pace to over-collect, but we are keeping our eye on that,” Sparks said.
The board had no terminations and voted to rehire all certified staff at the principal’s recommendations.
The board then set the sale for the elementary school bonds at noon on June 1 at the Elk City Board of Education.
Superintendent Sparks also told the board of a new initiative for third-grade students.
“We are going to be able to take 90 kids to Barnes and Nobel in Oklahoma City,” Sparks explained. “They will get a tour, and each kid will get $10 or so to buy a book of their choice. We will do this on May 2. We are excited to give this exciting reward to kids to encourage them to do independent reading.”
The board did not convene into executive session.
The board approved long-term substitute contracts with Rebecca Anderson and Jo Ediger.
“We had these two areas where we needed long-term substitutes. Both are certified teachers, so we are excited to have that for our students,” Sparks said.
Sparks also said new flooring is being installed in the middle school’s hallway and front entrance.
