Standard police protocol normally requires a law enforcement agency to ask a separate law enforcement agency to investigate any officer-involved shootings.
The Elk City Police Department followed that protocol after an August 2 incident resulted in the death of the suspect.
The Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation has now taken over the investigation.
According to a statement released by the OSBI, ECPD responded to a disturbance call on East Highway 66 and North County Road 2025 at approximately 7 pm on August 2.
Upon arrival, officers allegedly found 29-year-old Jerry Garcia brandishing a knife.
Officer reportedly commanded Garcia to drop the knife multiple times, but Garcia allegedly ignored officer commands and “moved to- ward the officers.”
“Medical personnel provided lifesaving measures, but Garcia was pronounced dead on the scene. The offi cers were not injured,” the OSBI report states.
The name or names of officers involved in the incident have not been released.
The OSBI noted that the investigation is still ongoing.
