Honoring Heroes: ODVA supports as Senator Lankford Champions Veterans History Project at Annual Conference

Oklahoma City, OK – July 16, 2024 – The Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs (ODVA) is proud to announce its support for Senator James Lankford’s office in the Veterans History Project, in collaboration with the Library of Congress. This significant event will be held at the Oklahoma American Legion Veterans Annual Conference on July 18th, 19th, and 20th, from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, at the Embassy Suites, located at 3233 Northwest Expressway, Oklahoma City, OK 73112.

The Veterans History Project (VHP) aims to collect, preserve, and make accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans, ensuring that future generations can hear directly from veterans and gain a deeper understanding of the realities of war. This initiative, led by the Library of Congress, relies on volunteers and partnerships nationwide to gather these invaluable stories.

“We are deeply committed to honoring and preserving the legacies of our veterans,” said Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs Deputy Director Shawn Kirkland. “Collaborating with Senator Lankford’s office and the Library of Congress on the Veterans History Project aligns with our mission to ensure that the voices and experiences of Oklahoma’s veterans are remembered and cherished for generations to come.”

During the conference, veterans will have the opportunity to share their stories, which will be recorded and submitted to the Library of Congress. These interviews will be preserved as part of a national archive, serving as an enduring testament to the sacrifices and contributions of our military service members.

The Oklahoma American Legion Veterans Annual Conference is a distinguished gathering that brings together veterans, their families, and supporters from across the state.

The ODVA will be present throughout the event, providing information and assistance on the various programs and services available to veterans in Oklahoma.
