Elk City ’24 graduate goes first-round in MLB draft

Local social media went haywire this week when Elk City High School graduate Kash Mayfield was drafted in the first round by the San Diego Padres for the annual Major League Baseball draft.

Mayfield had been slated to pitch for Oklahoma State University on an athletic scholarship, but the first round draft was too hard to pass up.

Elk City fans are elated. Matt Trotter said, “This kid deserves it! The drive he has is unmatched, and I hope we see big things from him in future. Baseball is a lot of ups and downs, but with this kids capabilities, it’s gonna be a hell of a ride to watch! “

ECHS Head Coach Jay McClure said, “It was a special night for Kash and his family. It’s always special when you see a young man who worked so hard for many years achieve his dreams. Kash is an outstanding young man, one of the hardest working young men I have ever seen.

My job was easy all I had to was put him in the line up and he did the rest. I can’t wait to see what Kash does in the future. “

Kash Mayfield received strong support from Elk City High School Head Coach Jay McClure and Assitant Coaches Taylor Varnell and Denny Geno
