Approximately fifty friends, family, and supports of the late 42-year-old Colter Vaught were in the Beckham County District Court to see the man accused of causing Vaught’s death arraigned on a new charge of outraging public decency.
Clayton Samson Hays, a 38-yearold Carter man, was charged in January with first-degree manslaughter for allegedly causing Vaught’s death by gunshot.
Hays had previously been released from the Beckham County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond with conditions.
The newest case is related to a memorial erected where Hays allegedly shot Vaught. Vaught died at the scene. The investigation in the newest case began on May 16 when the Beckham County Sheriff’s Office was contacted stating that Hays had been seen throwing a bag with a “large amount of animal feces” onto Vaught’s memorial.
Two witnesses were reportedly able to confirm this.
The vehicle that drove to the memorial reportedly matched Hays’ vehicle.
Also, Hays was required to wear a GPS monitor as a bond condition.
The GPS reportedly showed that Hays was at the location.
Hays was taken back into custody on the new misdemeanor charge.
On Wednesday, his bond was raised to $1,000,000 for the manslaughter charge.
It is unclear if his original bondsperson will give him credit for the cash and collateral used for his first bond.
Hays was also ordered to stay at least 350 feet from the memorial.
He additionally received a $5,000 bond for the outraging public decency charge.
Hays is due back in court in July.
