Cathy’s Lunch Legacy pays off lunch debt for two Beckham County schools

When Cathy Cummings died earlier this year, her husband Sean wanted to honor her memory of what she held dear. The couple lived in Oklahoma City, so Sean started first by paying off school lunch debt close to home.

Eventually, he started moving outward into the rural parts of the state.

Sean has kept account of every dollar donated to his cause and every dollar given. The amount so far is nearing $80,000.

Last week, he visited Sayre Public Schools and Elk City Public Schools. There, he paid off all the senior students’ lunch debt and a big part of the juniors’ lunch debt.

Elk City Superintendent Mike Sparks said, “We want to ensure Sean gets his due for coming out here. It is appreciated more than he knows.”

Sayre also thanked him for honoring his wife through helping local students.

Cummings has been featured nationally for his efforts.

“It was an honor,” Sean said. “And these are two beautiful towns. Cathy and I both advocated for public schools, and she believed students shouldn’t have to think about being hungry when they need to learn.”

His dog Ruthie is his faithful companion, as he travels to Oklahoma schools to honor his wife.
