A 49-year-old Mangum man was charged in the Beckham County District Court on April 10 with charges of assault on a police officer, larceny, and obstructing an officer. At approximately 10:06 am on April 9, Elk City police were dispatched to the Elk City Walmart for a possible shoplifter who had reportedly left the building with stolen items. The suspect was identified as Jason Bruffy.
While the responding officer was in route, he learned Bruffy’s last known location was near the Huddle House.
By the time the reporting officer arrived, a second ECPD officer was driving in an effort to get in front of Bruffy.
As the second officer got out of his patrol vehicle, Bruffy allegedly “rushed” towards him and attacked him.
The officer was able to take Bruffy to the ground.
At this point, the reporting officer assisted. “During our entire encounter, Bruffy continuously yelled threats that he would beat our (omitted) and that he was a Federal Marshal,” the reporting officer wrote.
Officers reportedly found a packaged sandwich that Bruffy had allegedly stolen.
A printout from Walmart was attached to the report showing the value of the alleged stolen items. Bruffy was bonded out of the Beckham County Detention Center on a $5,000 bond.
