Driver charged with escape in traffic stop

Suspect had outstanding warrant for pattern of criminal offenses

A 23-year-old Erick man is being held in the Beckham County Detention Center for escaping arrest and driving without a license.

Colby Ray Speed had an arrest warrant for pattern of criminal offenses and two counts of fraudulent credit card use at the time of his March 25 arrest.

Speed had been charged with the previous alleged crimes on March 14.

Speed’s bond is now $21,000 combined.

The newest investigation began at approximately 9:39 am on March 15 when an Elk City Police Department officer observed a Nissan with no identification plate turn north on Boone Avenue.

The officer got behind the vehicle as it reportedly accelerated.

On the 800 block of Calloway, the driver allegedly jumped from the vehicle and ran.

The officer reportedly recognized Speed from previous encounters.

Speed reportedly had an active arrest warrant.

The officer reportedly found methamphetamine in the vehicle that allegedly belonged to a passenger.

The passenger allegedly admitted to owning the substance.
