The Merritt High School Oilerettes played before a packed stadium at the famous “Big House” in Oklahoma City over the weekend in the Oklahoma State 2A State Tournament. The Merritt ladies were joined by the Merritt Oilers in the boys’ bracket, being the only unseated team to make it to the state games. While the boys were beat out in the semi-finals, the Oilerettes brought home victories in all three games.
The Merritt bleachers were adorned in black and orange with Oiler fans far and wide making the voyage to the state capitol to cheer the girls to victory. Several women in the crowd rocked their state championship jackets from 1980 as they proudly supported their alma mater to another title.
As the final buzzer rang on the third game, the jubilant team rushed the court. Ponytails swished through the air and were outshined only by their smiles and glee.
A season of hard work and dedication had paid the ultimate reward — a state championship that can never be taken from them.
