Futbol is the team sport most played around the world, yet, it is not as popular in the United States. Many highs schools do not have a soccer team, let alone two, as Elk City High School has. Probably the reason is that sports fans think that futbol is boring because usually there are very few scores made, as it is not uncommon to have games of 0-0, 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1; but, in the opinion of fans, that is exactly what makes it interesting, because it is so difficult to score. Proudly, Elk City High School has both, a girls’ team and a boys’ team. The boys are coached by Jason Xenos, and the girls are coached by Zak Stamm.
The state 4-A soccer season is now on full swing. The first game for boys and girls was on Friday, March 1st. Both games were against Altus. Prior to the first regional game, the boys had begun their season two weeks ago playing in a tournament in Newcastle, where they placed a commendable third place considering that Elk City was the only 4-A school competing against 5-A and 6-A schools.
Friday, March 1st, The girls started their season with a 1-0 win over Altus. Mariah Rivera was the scorer for Elk City. Last year, the girls had an 8-6 record and Coach Zack Stamm is looking forward to improving that record.
In the boys’ game, with goals from Kushtrim Maloku (28’) and Braxton Robertson (70’), the final score was 2-1 in favor of Elk City. The defense led by Jaser Reyes and Daniel Carmona bravely held off Altus to only one goal. Coach Jason Xenos, explained that his goal is for our boys to play “professional-like” soccer, more passes, while developing a deep understanding of the game, and recognizing everyone’s skills within the team to use the most positive results. Jason is very proud of his roster where he points out they are all good players and eager listeners to make Elk City H.S. a force in the state. Jason has a great futbol background having played in the USA, Argentina and Mexico, so he brings great experience to the team.
Tuesday March 5. Both Boys and Girls played against Cordell. Both games were at home.
The Girls won 2-1. Goals by Camryn Edney and Jolee King The Boys won 10-0. The passing game was great and once the team found the net a couple of times, they did not stop!
Great Going! As both teams have a 2 and 0 record.
