Today’s program was presented by Wendy Wheeler from The Candy Shack in Elk City. Anytime is a great time to shop in this downtown, family owned business but February is the perfect month to indulge in the large list of delicious sweet treats offered at The Candy Shack. Wendy shared her dream of owning a candy store and noted, “If you can dream it, you can do it!”

The harmonious sound of the Birthday Song was enjoyed as members honored the February birthdays of Becky, Mary Fern and Cathy. For a lighthearted look at life, Sharon Gilliland shared a devotional from the delightful book, “A Few Hallelujahs for Your Ho Hums,” written by Mary Hollingsworth. The minutes were approved as presented and the treasurer’s report was accepted.

Reports of committees followed with Suzanne Walker giving the scholarship report. A recipient will be selected as soon as all applications have been received and reviewed. The membership report was next with Glenda reporting 71 members. She also shared the Membership Minute, which noted that February is the time when one shows love on a more visible form. Discounts for OREA members on flowers and sweets are available through myambadiscounts. com. Another advantage from AMBA is the Long Term Care/ Elder Care Benefits Review. Members may contact David Moritz at AMBA, 512-7059213 for a review. Becky noted that volunteer hours for the past year should be turned in to her as soon as possible. The categories are Youth, Community and OREA. Linda reported that the Legislature reconvened Monday, February 5. Two COLA bills, HB 1277, HB 1290 and the 13th check bill, HB 2171 are alive and active. Two new bills that affect retirees, HB 3528 and HB 3522, have been recently introduced. For additional information regarding bills in the legislature, go to okhouse.gov. Linda had handouts that listed Legislative Goals for 2024 OREA Government Relations Committee. The goals include Benefit Adjustment, Defined Benefit, Fully Funding TRS, Health Insurance, Board Independence, and Public Education Funding. OREA supports retired educators as well as those currently teaching. A great way to stay informed of the happenings at the Capitol and other matters that directly affect teachers is to attend the local meetings. At the next meeting, March 8, 10:00 a.m., Greg Hartman, OSU Extension, is presenting the program about Monarch Butterflies. Jan Attocknie is scheduled to share the devotional.

Stephanie won the door prize. Linda adjourned the meeting.
