Elk City School Board Meets for February meeting

The Elk City School Board met at 6 pm on Monday, February 12 for its regularly scheduled meeting.

The Elk City School Board met at 6 pm on Monday, February 12 for its regularly scheduled meeting.

Superintendent Mike Sparks said the two biggest agenda items were related to a possible new food service provider for Elk City Public Schools and hearing a grievance from a parent.

The board voted to approve a new contract with OPAA Food Management Service to provide the children’s nutritional program. Sparks said the the company operates in numerous states and, within Oklahoma, several surrounding schools.

“This is just an opportunity for us to give our kids options, which isn’t something we had before,” Sparks advised.

The board then voted to go into executive session to discuss the grievance appeal filed by an Elk City parent, Amy Geraughty. In order for public comments to be given to the board, individuals are limited to three minutes in accordance with school policy and the superintendent must be notified at least 24 hours in advance.

Sparks said that the grievance, which he didn’t detail, had been already through two committees before being presented to the board. Like the committees, the board upheld actions taken by a facility member.

The board hired three elementary paraprofessionals and a new high school teacher.
