Governor’s Address: Boosting Oklahoma’s Businesses and Workforce

We officially started session on February 5 with the Governor’s annual State of the State Address.

We officially started session on February 5 with the Governor’s annual State of the State Address.

In his speech, he emphasized a reduction of .25% in income tax, expanding choices for charter schools, enhancing the State’s business environment, and discontinuing subsidies for low-enrollment and low-graduation-rate higher learning institutions as key focuses for 2024.

The Governor reiterated his goal of transforming Oklahoma into the most business-friendly state while curbing government expansion. He highlighted achievements in cutting regulations and enhancing the ease of doing business within the State.

He called on the Legislature to set up a court system to address business disputes. As part of his efforts to become the most business-friendly state in the country, he encouraged local governments to join the initiative. I believe Oklahoma’s effective regulations, affordable energy, strategic location, and skilled workforce make it an ideal option for industries looking to relocate.

The Governor also called for consolidating public colleges and universities. He wants the state to shift its focus to outcome- based higher education models and stop subsidizing institutions with low enrollment and graduation rates.

An example of consolidation is the University Center of Southern Oklahoma in Ardmore merging with Murray State College, which is based in Tishomingo. Through that 2021 merger, UCSO became Murray State College Ardmore.

He hopes to see models of higher education that fulfill the needs of the state workforce and consolidate colleges that do not fulfill those needs. I completely agree with his goal to see legislation that prioritizes Oklahoma’s workforce needs.
