Preparing for Session

The next legislative session begins on Monday, February 5, and I’m looking forward to advocating for my constituents in House District 55.

Before session begins, however, I’ve been spending as much time as possible with my kids and family. When we’re in session, I’m at the Capitol Monday through Thursday, and I’m soaking up these last few days before my schedule gets busy with session. The time commitment of a legislator, while demanding, brings numerous opportunities for growth and positive impact. Though be-ing away from home most of the week during session is tough, I’m excited about everything the Legislature will accomplish this year. In the meantime, I’ve been making the rounds and visiting many community functions in House District 55 before session kicks off. I do my best to attend events in the district when we’re in session, but our calendar can be so unpredictable that I sometimes have to miss events until session ends in May.

Last week, my mother-in-law brought my kids, Xander and Emilia, to the Capitol to experience Colonial Day. This is a great educational opportunity for kids to learn about the early history of our country, and there are hundreds of people who come here every year to attend. I got the full report from Xander and Emilia later, and it sounded like they had a great time, but I’ll have to keep an eye out for Colonial-era costumes for them to wear next year! I recently had a group from Western Oklahoma Christian School visit the Capitol for a tour. It’s always so fun to host visitors from western Oklahoma, and especially school kids. For many of them, it’s their first time visiting the seat of their state government. I always do my best to ensure they have a positive experience here, but most importantly, I reiterate to these students that the Capitol is their Capitol. It’s their voices and opinions that matter here, and they inspire new laws, change members’ votes, and shift our state’s priorities. With session kicking off, please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns about legislation. My office phone is (405) 557-7312, or you can reach me through my email at [email protected]. Thank you for the honor of serving you at the Capitol!
