Canute Varsity Trojans stole the lead late in the game in a 9-5 victory over Merritt Varsity Oilers on Friday. The game was tied at four with Canute Varsity Trojans batting in the bottom of the sixth when Jake Beutler singled on a 2-2 count, scoring two runs.
Canute Varsity Trojans earned the victory despite allowing Merritt Varsity Oilers to score three runs in the second inning. Merritt Varsity Oilers’s big inning was driven by a walk by Cody Vaught, a triple by Caden McGilbert, and a single by Layton Freas.
Merritt Varsity Oilers opened up scoring in the second inning when Freas singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.
In the top of the fifth inning, Merritt Varsity Oilers tied things up at four. Merritt Varsity Oilers scored one run when Gentry McGuire singled.
Brody Bryant was the winning pitcher for Canute Varsity Trojans. Bryant went seven innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out six.
Vaught was on the pitcher’s mound for Merritt Varsity Oilers. The pitcher lasted six innings, allowing seven hits and nine runs while striking out two.
Kasen Legrand led Canute Varsity Trojans with two hits in three at bats.
McGuire went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Merritt Varsity Oilers in hits.
