This week we celebrated 4-H at the Capitol! This day is designed for 4-H members to meet with state representatives or senators.
4-H provides Oklahoma youth with opportunities to build life skills and grow students into dedicated, committed young adults who appreciate the value of hard work and determination.
I was honored to have the opportunity to visit with 4-H student Brance Barnett from Sentinel!
Also, this week, I had two Senate Bills pass House committees.
First, Senate Bill 193 passed the Appropriation and Budget General Government Subcommittee. It now moves to the full Appropriations and Budget Committee.
I am proud to serve as the principal House author on SB193. It would provide six weeks of paid maternity leave for full-time state employees following the birth or adoption of a child.
Through interim studies, we have learned that significant issues impact our state’s workforce, especially women, who have been the most considerable population to leave the workforce in recent years. In 2021 employee turnover cost the state $110 million, and a portion of those employees were women who quit following the birth of a child.
I am excited and ready for the challenge of passing this bill through the House – I will keep you updated on this bill throughout the legislative process.
Next, Senate Bill 939 passed in the transportation committee with 13 ‘yes’ votes. It increases the term limit for the Board of Directs for the Oklahoma Space Industry Development Authority from two four-year terms to three fouryear terms.
SB939 also clarifies that an appointment to complete an unexpired term does not count toward that member three four-year term limit.
I intend to continually keep you informed of what is happening at the Capitol. It is truly an honor and privilege to represent you at the State Capitol. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any concerns at (405) 557-7312 or at [email protected].
Nick Archer, a Republican, serves House District 55 in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, which covers Beckham, Blaine, Caddo, Canadian and Washita counties.
