SWOSU Community Recreation Hosts Veterans Day Softball Tournament

The Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) Department of Parks and Recreation recently organized a softball tournament in honor of Veterans Day on Saturday, Nov. 11 at Rader Park in Weatherford.

Students from the Community Recreation class, led by Instructor Paul Hummel, were behind this event, showcasing SWOSU’s commitment to practical community engagement.

The hands-on class involved students in the entire event planning process, from needs assessment to event execution. This year’s Slow Pitch and BBQ Pits event featured a softball tournament and homerun derby, with two participating teams: the Parks and Wildlife Law Enforcement COPS and the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

Community Recreation has a track record of hosting successful community events, like Duke’s Mad Dash and Crowder Adventure Race, with all proceeds directed to entities chosen by the students. This year, the event raised $215, all of which went to support the Veterans Center in Clinton, specifically for recreational activities like bingo prizes, holiday baskets, and baseball games.

The event was made possible through sponsorships from Subway, The Buzz, Weatherford Parks and Recreation Department, and Great Plains Kubota.
